If you teach yoga, you've probably encountered hypermobile students before, you just might not know it. With estimates suggesting that around 1 in 10 people are hypermobile, this common condition shows up a lot in yoga spaces, but not often addressed in training.
Maybe you know some of the basics, but aren't sure how to bring that knowledge into the yoga room. You've probably heard blanket guidelines like “don't use your full range” or “microbend your joints,” but want to understand the why behind that advice and recognize when those generalizations might actually be unhelpful. Or perhaps you're still unsure about the difference between hypermobility and flexibility in the first place.
This 2.5-hour continuing education workshop is for yoga teachers who want to better understand hypermobility within the context of the yoga space. You will learn about generalized joint hypermobility, how it can show up in group classes or 1:1s, and how we can best support our students in building trust within their own bodies.
The workshop will be partially lecture based, examining the difference between active and passive range of motion and examining how stability, strength, and proprioception influence movement. We will also address common misconceptions, and the potential harm of fear-based language.
Our goal is not to teach fear around the range students can access, but to cultivate discernment around how and when to access the range. From discussion into experiential movement, teachers will learn practical tools for supporting hypermobile bodies through refined observation, cueing, use of props, and occasional hands-on assists.
Whether you are hypermobile yourself or teaching others, this workshop is an opportunity to refine your skills as a teacher while developing a deeper understanding of the relationship between mobility, stability, and body awareness. Together, we’ll explore how to empower ourselves and our students to move with greater awareness, discernment, and trust.
No prior understanding of hypermobility is required for this learning experience.

About Your Teachers
We decided to partner on this workshop because we both understand what it feels like to move through yoga spaces where our body isn't fully considered, where generalized cues have left us feeling unsupported, misunderstood, or like our body is "just different". We created this workshop to share what we've learned and help our fellow teachers develop a more nuanced approach to working with hypermobility, so students can feel seen, supported, and empowered in their practice.

Miriam Nurjahan (she/they)
is a 200-hour RYT who came to yoga looking for a way to burn off excess energy and found a practice that taught her to listen to herself. Informed by lived experience with hypermobility and neurodivergence, her teaching blends strength and stability with somatic inquiry, helping students understand the “why” behind the practice and make informed choices in their own bodies.

Liana Nicole Wall (she/her)
is a 500+ hour trained yoga teacher and YACEP with 10 years of teaching experience and more than 15 years of personal practice. As a hypermobile practitioner and teacher, Liana has developed a particular interest in helping yoga teachers move beyond generalized cues and fear-based approaches toward greater observation, discernment, and individualized support.
